Should we rewrite history? At the University of Virginia, students and faculty want mention of Thomas Jefferson, writer of the Declaration of Independence, third president, and founder of the University of Virginia, removed and faculty to stop quoting him because he was a slaveholder. (Recently violent protests broke out when a statue of Robert E Lee was approved for dismounting.) At Princeton, students still want all mention of Woodrow Wilson removed because of his segregationist views as president. High school students at a high school in Madison, WI wanted the name of James Madison (fourth president and writer of much of the Constitution) removed because he had owned slaves and that was intimidating to African-American students. At Harvard, a move is underway to remove all mention of the Puritans who founded the University as it is offensive. The newly released movie Dunkirk, about the historic evacuation of the British Expeditionary Force from France in World War II along with French and Belgian soldiers is under attack because no people of color are in lead roles even though none were in commanding roles during the actual events. Is this political correctness gone too far? Are we close to the point of rewriting history so everyone feels included?
Solar Eclipse: America’s greatest eclipse is coming! On Aug. 21, America will experience a solar eclipse. This means the moon will pass between the sun and earth, casting a shadow across a swath of the United States. The spectacle will be like nothing most people have ever seen. This will be the first in a century to cross the entire continental US. The moon will pass between our planet and the sun, completely blocking out the sunlight for people standing in its 70 mile-wide shadow. Over the course of an hour and a half, that shadow will follow the moon’s path across the continent, beginning off the Oregon coast and traveling down to South Carolina. Are you an eclipse enthusiast? Why or Why not?
Interview: Mike Schindler, Navy Veteran Founder/CEO Operation Military Cares; Author “US Veterans in the Workforce”. Topic: McCain’s Brain. Senator McCain chose to receive medical treatment from specialists at the Mayo Clinic. His veteran status made him eligible to receive treatment from the VA. but he chose a private hospital. McCain advocates the VA medical system for his fellow veterans. Why isn’t the VA good enough for the Chair of the Senate Armed Forces Committee?
Are colleges failing to teach our kids to think? Yes according to a Wall Street Journal article which went into depth about this problem. It was published in June, just in time for graduation, presumably to drive home a point. Students often get a degree because they were able to memorize information, yet they don’t know how to think! The article claims that more than half of schools and at least a third of seniors were unable to make a cohesive argument. In addition, they were unable to assess the quality of evidence in a document, or even interpret data in a table. But do you agree? If so, how would you go about teaching someone how to think?
