Last week NBC received massive criticism for airing Megan Kelly’s interview with Alex Jones. Jones is known for questioning 911 as a possible government “inside job,” and for questioning whether the Sandy Hook massacre was, in part, staged. Some parents of the 20 children murdered at Sandy Hook Elementary school were shocked and offended that NBC and Kelly would even have a Jones interview and the nonprofit Sandy Hook Promise Gala dropped Kelly from their fundraiser. Still, NBC aired the Jones interview on Father’s Day. Kelly’s producer insisted that it’s the “job of journalists to interview news makers and people of influence no matter how abhorrent their views may be.” To what end did the interview provide an insight into the mind of Jones?

Pink Slime lawsuit: The South Dakota meat processor’s (BPI) 5.7B defamation lawsuit against ABC, has put big agriculture against big media. It’s the first major court challenge against a media company since accusations of “fake news,” and reminiscent of Oprah verses the cattle industry. At hand is whether ABC reporter Jim Avila defamed the meat processor when he often described finely textured beef as “pink slime.” This ingredient is the thin trimmings of a cow, treated with ammonia to kill bacteria, and is not dangerous. After the report, the processor closed 3 of their 4 plants and saw their revenues drop 80%. Why would ABC refer to the trimmings as “pink slime” risking a major defamation lawsuit?
